so i've been on a bit of a pillow kick lately [hence our bed, below], so i decided to give martha stewart's napkin-folded pillowcases a try. mine looks a little different from hers...i sewed through the pillow to attach the buttons, whereas she just sewed the button onto the pillowcase, but i love how it turned out! planning to make a few more soon. oh, and to be fair, my mom did 95% of the work because i was too scared to mess up. but i think i'm game for doing the next one on my own!
start with a 14" square pillow form. i found this one at ikea for $1.79.
you'll also need a 20" square cloth napkin. i found a 4-pack like this one at target for $9.99, so around $2.50 per pillow!
you'll also need 2 buttons per pillow. i got mine at joann's with a coupon, so they weren't too expensive. pick any kind you like!
fold the four corners of the napkin around the pillow and overlap the edges so they lay flat [i arranged mine envelope-style]. place the button in the middle of the pillow, where the napkin corners meet. sew on button and push your needle through the pillow to attach the second button on the other side. you'll need to pull the thread tight as you go [i used a double layer of thread] to hold everything together.
once the button is sewn on, tack down each corner with a few slip stitches. the napkin should cling close to the pillow, but if not, you can stitch right up to the button to hold it in place.
and viola! a cutie pillow in just a few minutes! the back...
and the front...
thanks mom! xoxo
