sunday lovin: links loved.

I've been listening to this, this, this, and this quite a bit lately.
(thanks to Maryn for the bring the last two to my attention!)
Landon and I watched all four parts of The Weight of the Nation this weekend. You should too.
How pretty are these photos? I've only been to Montana once, but I'd love to go back someday.

xoxo.

[photos: some instagram shots from my weekend. i kind of can't believe that i snapped that second photo in the year 2012, and not 1962.]

sunday lovin: community.

Just dropping in to put on record that I love our community here in Abilene. This is our lifegroup from church, and we've been so blessed to get to know and serve with all of them. It's made this whole move to Texas much less homesick-inducing or culture-shocking, and I'm really grateful for that (having been a pro at the homesick thing in college). No matter where life takes Landon and I, I think we'll always remember this place in our lives as a really special one.

That's all.

sunday lovin: it's beginning to look a lot like christmas...

We've got wintry candles, holiday garlands (tutorial coming tomorrow!) and DIY gifts galore over here at the Bright household and I love it. This really is the best time of year.

sunday lovin: 29.

A very happy anniversary to Landon's parents, Dave and DeAnn, who are celebrating 29 years today!
I am often reminded of how blessed Landon and I are to both have such loving and faithful parents
in our lives. On top of that, my parents are visiting later this month, and Landon's family has already
booked their trip for Thanksgiving. We can't wait for visitors!

sunday lovin: blessed.

Hi friends! First and foremost, I have to tell you that on Friday afternoon I was offered a job! This was especially wonderful news since Landon's position as a grad assistant was somewhat contingent on me finding a job (financially speaking). I'll be the e-communciations coordinator at McMurry University, starting tomorrow! We feel so blessed, and I think it will be a really good position for me. It feels like we are finally settling in here in Abilene. We've found a church that we really enjoy, some new friends, and now I've got a job. Isn't it great how God works things out? I'm thrilled, excited, nervous, and reminded that God always has a plan. Right now, I have this line from a song we sang at church this morning in my head:

You make all things work together for my good.

Always a good reminder. Have a great week!

sunday lovin: learning.

A few weeks ago, my dad sent me this book. It's changing my thoughts toward, my feelings about and my relationship with God. It's so wonderful to be in a place of peaceful and open learning. I'm grateful for this time in my life to read, think and reflect. That's all.

sunday lovin: insight.

My mom, looking pensive at Half Dome in a previous decade.
I read this a few months ago, but I think it's even more applicable to my life now than it was at that point,
because I feel like I'm in the process of renovating my soul.

A Major in Discomfort
by Charles R. Swindoll
Notice carefully how the process took place through those years of desert learning, because it is the same with you and me. God must break through several hard, exterior barriers in our lives before He can renovate our souls. His persistent goal is to break through to the inner person. As David acknowledged, "Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, and in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom" (Psalm 51:6).
What are those resistant layers in our hearts, and how does He break through to that hidden part? First, He finds pride. And He uses the sandpaper of obscurity to remove it ever so gradually.
Then He finds us gripped by fear---dread of our past, anxiety over our present, and terror over what may lie ahead---and He uses the passing of time to remove that fear. We learn that things aren't out of hand at all; they're in His hand.
He next encounters the barrier of resentment---the tyranny of bitterness. He breaks down that layer with solitude. In the silence of His presence, we gain a fresh perspective, gradually release our cherished rights, and let go of the expectations that held us hostage.
Finally, He gets down to the basic habits of living, he penetrates our inner person, and there He brings discomfort and hardship to buff away that last layer of resistance. Why? So that He might renovate us at the very core of our being.
Reach for the hand of your Guide! He is Lord of the desert. Make that your desert. The most precious object of God's love is His child in the desert. If it were possible, you mean more to Him during this time than at any other time. You are as the pupil of His eye. You are His beloved student taking his toughest courses. While testing you, He loves you with an infinite amount of love.
Jesus walked through the desert first. He felt its heat. He endured its loneliness. He accepted its obscurity. He faced down Satan himself while the desert winds howled. And you can be sure He will never, ever forget or forsake the one who follows Him across the sand.

sunday lovin: dee-ay-dee.

A very happy Father's Day to my dad. I could go on for paragraphs about how my dad has shaped, encouraged and loved me, but let me sum things up this way (I know I've shared this story before, but it's an important one to me):

When I was little, I always rode in the middle seat of our blue station wagon when I was running errands with my Dad. And most times, when we pulled in the driveway, he turned to me and said, “Katie, I really like being with you."

Life-changing words. Love you, Dad.

sunday lovin: 35 years.

Today marks 35 years that my parents have been married. Mom and Dad, thanks for always being a picture of a healthy, honest and loving marriage. I love thinking about all the things you guys have accomplished together, like flipping nasty houses into really cute ones, for example, or speaking fake sign language that I thought was real until last year. You're the best, and I hope you have at least 35 more years together [at which point you'll be in your nineties and probably still rototilling together].
Sidenote: I could look at these pictures all day long. I've tried to convince my mom that she should bring this hair style back, but she has yet to agree. And no, there's not a speck of hair dye there. That's all natural strawberry goodness [can you tell I've always been a little jealous?]

sunday lovin: getting our pack on.

An impressive packing job that I saw on my trip to Morocco in 2007
Hi friends! Landon and I had a productive weekend as we began to pack up our apartment for the move to Abilene.
We're skipping the U-haul and trailor and we're only taking my car (a Ford Taurus), so meticulous packing and LOTS of purging are a must.
Basically, we're trying to avoid looking like the van above as pull out of Lebanon. And with 16-ish boxes packed so far, we're well on our way!

How was your weekend?

sunday lovin: a new look.

I decided it's time for a new look at The Bright Life! Something clean, fresh and simple. In the words of my dearest friend Maryn, "Simple is the new thing," so that must mean I'm on the right track. You'll also notice the tab on the side for "TylerBright," a little collaboration between Renee and I that's in the works. The tab isn't linked yet, but expect an official announcement about TylerBright in the near future!

Let me know your thoughts on the new design!

sunday lovin: this conversation.

i think one of landon's best qualities is that his jokes are unpredictable. or maybe i'm just gullible. hence, this conversation:

landon: i knew someone who got swallowed by a whale.
katie: you DID!?!? nooooo...wait, like jonah?
[landon laughs]
[katie realizes she fell for it once again]

sunday lovin: the ripstik.

We got my nephew a ripstik (i.e. waveboard/caster board) for his birthday, and then of course we had to give it a try after he opened it:

i think i could keep myself busy for hours if i had one of these.
needless to say, we'll be like these guys in no time.

sunday lovin: twine letters.

I created a little project for myself yesterday: covering cut pieces of cork board with baker's twine as a little entryway garland for our apartment.
First I covered the letters in twine.
Then, I hot-glued red paper clips to the back of each letter, to act as a hook for stringing them together.
And ta-da! A little greeting that guests will see as they walk through our front door [the few guests we do have, that is].
So, hello and happy Sunday!

Hope your weekend has been wonderful and relaxing.
xoxo

p.s. Tomorrow is Landon's birthday...a relief from Valentine's Day hype, or just added pressure? I'm not sure.

sunday lovin: it's a girl.

This weekend, I went to a baby shower for Landon's cousin, Mekela, who is expecting a sweet little baby girl soon.
The shower was hosted at Aunt Julie + Uncle Tim's gorgeous home, which was decorated in pink, pink, pink to celebrate Adalaide's impending arrival!

 Adalaide,
We can't wait to meet you! You have wonderful parents and lots of really cute dresses waiting for you.
