off we go.

At the end of January, I wrote these words on the chalkboard in our kitchen.

Commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him, and He will act.

Those words--simple, but so profound--have been woven into the past three months. They've been spoken in prayer and echoed in thought. They've calmed fears, they've calmed emotion, and they've brought peace. I know that God is not transactional, but I also know that His Word is true. If you commit your way to the Lord, and if you trust in Him, He will act. It may not be in ways you'd expect, it may not be without mystery, but He will act. I believe today, more than ever, in the power of His Word, and the power of His will. Not because everything has gone according to my plan, but because I've tried, each day, despite my imperfections, to let things go according to His.

And so it's with a deep sense of joy and gratitude for what the Lord has provided for us that I write...
we're moving to South Carolina!

Landon has accepted a job as head cross country coach at Bob Jones University, with the opportunity to start a new cross country program. I've also accepted a position as the assistant cross country coach, and we're both thrilled about what the future holds.

There are many, many details to figure out and a lot of work to be done, but we know that with each step, if we commit our way to the Lord, trust in Him, then we can rest assured that He will act.

He is faithful!

Photos are from our trip to Greenville last month.

trust.

Saturdays, for me, are quiet. Very, very quiet. Most (not all) Saturdays, Landon has cross country or track meets that are three or four hours away. He typically leaves on Friday afternoons and gets back very late on Saturday nights. So that leaves just Spur and I home on Saturdays. I usually take the day as an opportunity to go through my weekend rituals, like cleaning the house, planning my meals, and planning my outfits for the week (I know what you're thinking--outfits?!? That sounds so superficial, does it not? It honestly makes me a much happier person in the mornings throughout the week). And, being the task-oriented-planner-and-introvert-who-loves-predictability that I am, I've come to enjoy these very quiet but very productive Saturdays.

Lately, though, they've brought with them just a twinge of loneliness. And a hint of worry. And an ounce of fear.

The beginnings of a very terrible combination.

Landon and I are in a pretty uncertain place right now. Where will we be living in 6 months? What will Landon do after graduation? When will we start having kids?

And so on these very quiet Saturdays, giving in to the overwhelming sense of uncertainty is really tempting. For me, giving in to that temptation means worrying about something before it's happened, daydreaming about a possibility before God has revealed his plan, and being fearful of what people might think of us depending on the outcome. These are silly thoughts, but they are not harmless.

And so I'm writing this now almost as a bit of accountability. To get it out there that this is a struggle for me, and to take a stand in my own heart and mind to refuse to let loneliness, worry, and fear take up residence in my life. Because not only are those thoughts selfish, they're destructive. And by dwelling on what might be negative about my situation, I'm actually saying that I don't believe God can overcome it. Every time I try to take control by worry or selfish ambition, I'm ripping my story away from Him and saying, "Here, God, let me have a go at this, I think I can do it better."

I don't want to know the depths of grief that choosing that kind of path will take me. And while choosing to walk daily with God is a challenge every moment, I can rest in knowing that no uncertainty is too big for Him to know, and no Saturday is too quiet for Him to speak.

the gift of being together.

This Christmas will be different than others. In Christmases past, I've given Landon books, movies (documentaries, of course), clothes, and shoes. He's given me clothes, journals, washi tape, and books. He even gave me a ring one year.

But this year, we're not giving each other anything. We're giving each other everything. No gifts, no wrapping paper, just time, honesty, and intention. Time to enjoy just being together, honesty as we face the future, and intention in the way we shape our days, putting God's holy work first and each other second, which leaves everything else in a race for third.

We will surely give gifts again in the future, but this year, we're learning how to be generous without purchasing, and how to give without expectation. It's not something we've discussed much, it's just sort of happened in this season of our lives. And it's been exactly what I've needed. No distractions, no holiday stress, just the gift of being together.

our mini-thanksgiving.

Landon and I are celebrating Thanksgiving a little early this year--and since it's just the two of us, I'm keeping the menu pretty simple (just our favorites!). The turkey and trifle recipes are both new (to me), and I'm really excited to try them. I made the twice baked sweet potatoes last year (to die for), and the creamed corn is my all time favorite dish. Really. It's that good. That's why I've deemed it "world's best."

And, on another note, I'm so very grateful for the things I've been learning this year, and the things God continues to reveal to me through His word, the people I meet, the books I read, and the conversations I have. He is so good, and His goodness takes on new meaning for me everyday. It's strangely beautiful how we can be changed in something so constant--His love.

if i could wear the same thing every day...

It would be the most perfect shirtdress.

Landon could even wear the matching shirt.

we'll be home for christmas.

It's official. We'll be back in the Great Northwest for Christmas! We booked our tickets this past weekend thanks to the killer flight prices on Spirit Air, and I'm looking forward to family, friends, cream corn (hint, hint mom!) and, if you're lucky, a return of the elf costume.

sometimes i take photos.

Ah, the desolation that is West Texas.

 Dinnertime!
You know how we feel about sour cream...

 Us.

Never fear, my brow wax is scheduled for this weekend.

oh my two.

Two years ago, I woke up around 4 a.m. I couldn't sleep, so I tip-toed quietly out of my room, past these sleeping beauties, up the stairs and into the kitchen. I sat down, looking out at the yard, and thinking about the big things that were just hours away. I made a list of all the things that still needed to be done before 3pm. I was nervous about forgetting things, worried about not getting enough sleep, and wondering if I'd left enough time for the pre-ceremony photos.

As the sun was just beginning to rise, I walked out into the yard. And just like a true Portland summer, it was chilly (but the perfect kind of chilly for which the only remedy is a light, snuggly blanket wrapped around you). I looked over everything. I walked through the grass. And I took it all in. The chill, the stillness, the anticipation, and the idea that when the day was over, life would be different for me, each day a new kind of blessing.

A few minutes after 6pm, I walked out an open door and took my Dad's arm. And as we started walking together, he said, "Just take it all in." I was back in the same spot I'd stood alone hours before, but this time, The Grand Waltz from Sound of Music was playing, lots of family and friends were looking my way, and I was wearing the finest piece of art my mom has ever created. Everything was different, but I was taking it all in.

Being married to Landon is amazing, challenging, and redeeming. It's hard work, and the easiest thing I've ever done. Landon has helped me to grow deeper roots in many areas, and uproot in other areas. He's taught me that life isn't about stuff, that each place is what you make of it, and that deep down, I'm really just a desperate cat lady.
We won't see a single person today who was with us two years ago except each other. We're so grateful for all those who helped, guided, loved, and sewed (ahem, mom) to make our big day happen, but when the bunting flags come down and the extra lace is in the craft basket, it's really just me and LB. Taking it all in.

i'm still here.

Sigh, this poor little blog has been so lonely lately. But, on the up side, I've been spending lots of time with this guy--my new (to me) bike! As my family, Landon, and my insurance agent all know, handle bars suit me much better than a steering wheel. Plus, being outside first thing in the morning is a really relaxing way to start my day as I ride to work.

hey ho.

I love him.

And this song is perfect. Happy Friday!

off on the right foot.

Our weekend started with an early morning run, from-scratch blackberry waffles, a trip to the bike shop and some grocery shopping. Here's to fitting as much in two days as we did in three last weekend.

the year that changed me.

My texagram (which I just invented).

After more than a week of traveling, we arrived in Abilene, Texas, on May 23, 2011. One year ago today.

Wow. One year. I'm already tearing up.

There's something that happens to you when everyday for a year has some element of the unknown in it. When it always seems like a surprise might be right around the corner. A bill you can't pay. A job you didn't get. A church you've never been to. Even simple things--like a phrase you've never heard (i.e. frito pie). But each day, the unfamiliarity and the worry and the fear wear off a little bit more. And you start to know a new place. You start to be known in that place. And you start to know yourself. And slowly, the surprises change their tune. A check you didn't expect. A job that seemed like a long shot. A church that welcomes you and keeps you. And even simple things--like a dining table for Thanksgiving.

This is a thank you, and it's been a long time coming.

UBCAbilene, thanks for fooling us with your giant building. Without it, we may have never visited on that first Sunday. And even though there were only about 75 people there that morning, you hooked us with your welcoming Texas charm and spaghetti lunch.

To our awesome lifegroup, which has walked with us faithfully for a year. Thanks for the conversations, laughs, meals, endless desserts, and prayer. Getting to know people in Abilene so quickly after our move has made such a difference. We treasure you all.

Dear friends in Oregon, San Diego, and beyond, who we miss and think about often. Someday we'll take you all to Fiji or something and all hangout together (that's a totally empty promise). Thanks to those who have called, listened, and laughed at how crazy Texas can be. And rebuked me for turning into a cat lady (ahem...Renee).

My cousins and siblings, who SOMEHOW managed to pull out a Turkey Bowl win even without Primetime (that's my name out on the field). And for live tweeting to keep me posted on the score.

My family (some of whom like to consistently answer the phone with "How y'all doin?"), for the support, advice, prayer and love, even from 1,600 miles away. And for Facetime-ing me during important events, like the Turkey Bowl and Browning Family Easter Egg Hunt. Special shout-out to my mom who, no matter how many times I call her, still picks up the phone every time. She can handle everything from tears and tiredness to questions about roasting chicken, and that takes a special lady.

Landon's family, who shared a special time at Thanksgiving with us that I'll always remember. It's also great that they think the Abilene Chihuahua Gangs (ACG) are as funny as we do. Thanks for your constant love and encouragement.

And to Landon, for having the faith, wisdom, and insight to bring us here. I think he was a little uneasy about moving to a small town in West Texas with a girl who spent a year being homesick in San Diego of all places. But I wouldn't change a thing. God has given us so many opportunities to grow, and I'm so very grateful to be able to experience that with Landon. A year ago, I remember assuring Landon before we moved that I didn't want a man who was committed to keeping me comfortable. I wanted a man who was willing to help me change and grow, and who would change and grow with me. He's been that, and so much more.

To my faithful Savior, your love, provision and grace never fails. I am yours.

Here's to another year of trials, blessings, and God's faithfulness.

A few weeks ago, Landon surprised me with a little something...

...and we call him Spur.

where i'm from.

Landon sent me this video to watch while he's in class tonight.

It sure made me miss this sweet little place.

xoxo.

P.S. Anyone else feel like a "Soarin' Over Portland" ride should go in at Oaks Park after watching this?
Just kidding, we Portlanders really aren't the amusement park kind.

P.S.S. Email subscribers, you'll need to click through to the post to see the video.

our wonderful weekend.

Our weekend was made up of three of my favorite kind of days: the ones where Landon and I spend basically every moment together, talking about everything we I can think of.

First up, a picnic of course! ...And at what we deemed the Mission Bay of Abilene, no less.

...Followed by a trip to the Abilene Zoo! We were quite impressed with this little zoo...

And every cat made me miss our sweet little Snook!

This vulture was clearly thinking, Whaddup suckas?!?!

Also, this...

Our Easter was filled with lots of tasty foods! I'm actually quite happy to announce that, with the exception of my not-so-pretty deviled eggs, everything turned out!

We had sweet potatoes with roasted grapes, goat cheese and honey...
(recipe here, repin here)

...lemony asparagus
(recipe here)

...creamy deviled eggs
(recipe here)

and chocolate shelled cheesecake "eggs" with peach jam!
(based on recipe here, repin here)

I also got to watch my niece and nephew on their egg hunt in my parents' yard, thanks to FaceTime!

Hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend!

xoxo.
