we'll be home for christmas.

It's official. We'll be back in the Great Northwest for Christmas! We booked our tickets this past weekend thanks to the killer flight prices on Spirit Air, and I'm looking forward to family, friends, cream corn (hint, hint mom!) and, if you're lucky, a return of the elf costume.

last week...

...was amazing. I went back to Portland, and while the trip was short, the days were full and rich with all the things I love. I went to help with CookingThyme's part in the Happy Valley 4th of July Family Festival, which was a blast. A full day with the fam sharing something I'm passionate about? Sign me up. Plus, in just 72 hours, I saw my entire family and Landon's, saw a couple of close friends, and scarfed down everything my mom put in front of me.

I am blessed beyond words, and my heart is full.

the year that changed me.

My texagram (which I just invented).

After more than a week of traveling, we arrived in Abilene, Texas, on May 23, 2011. One year ago today.

Wow. One year. I'm already tearing up.

There's something that happens to you when everyday for a year has some element of the unknown in it. When it always seems like a surprise might be right around the corner. A bill you can't pay. A job you didn't get. A church you've never been to. Even simple things--like a phrase you've never heard (i.e. frito pie). But each day, the unfamiliarity and the worry and the fear wear off a little bit more. And you start to know a new place. You start to be known in that place. And you start to know yourself. And slowly, the surprises change their tune. A check you didn't expect. A job that seemed like a long shot. A church that welcomes you and keeps you. And even simple things--like a dining table for Thanksgiving.

This is a thank you, and it's been a long time coming.

UBCAbilene, thanks for fooling us with your giant building. Without it, we may have never visited on that first Sunday. And even though there were only about 75 people there that morning, you hooked us with your welcoming Texas charm and spaghetti lunch.

To our awesome lifegroup, which has walked with us faithfully for a year. Thanks for the conversations, laughs, meals, endless desserts, and prayer. Getting to know people in Abilene so quickly after our move has made such a difference. We treasure you all.

Dear friends in Oregon, San Diego, and beyond, who we miss and think about often. Someday we'll take you all to Fiji or something and all hangout together (that's a totally empty promise). Thanks to those who have called, listened, and laughed at how crazy Texas can be. And rebuked me for turning into a cat lady (ahem...Renee).

My cousins and siblings, who SOMEHOW managed to pull out a Turkey Bowl win even without Primetime (that's my name out on the field). And for live tweeting to keep me posted on the score.

My family (some of whom like to consistently answer the phone with "How y'all doin?"), for the support, advice, prayer and love, even from 1,600 miles away. And for Facetime-ing me during important events, like the Turkey Bowl and Browning Family Easter Egg Hunt. Special shout-out to my mom who, no matter how many times I call her, still picks up the phone every time. She can handle everything from tears and tiredness to questions about roasting chicken, and that takes a special lady.

Landon's family, who shared a special time at Thanksgiving with us that I'll always remember. It's also great that they think the Abilene Chihuahua Gangs (ACG) are as funny as we do. Thanks for your constant love and encouragement.

And to Landon, for having the faith, wisdom, and insight to bring us here. I think he was a little uneasy about moving to a small town in West Texas with a girl who spent a year being homesick in San Diego of all places. But I wouldn't change a thing. God has given us so many opportunities to grow, and I'm so very grateful to be able to experience that with Landon. A year ago, I remember assuring Landon before we moved that I didn't want a man who was committed to keeping me comfortable. I wanted a man who was willing to help me change and grow, and who would change and grow with me. He's been that, and so much more.

To my faithful Savior, your love, provision and grace never fails. I am yours.

Here's to another year of trials, blessings, and God's faithfulness.

xoxo.

portfolio: kailyn + philip's save the dates

Today I'm super excited to share the save the dates that Renee and I designed for Kailyn and Philip. I've known Kailyn and Philip for a long, long time, as we all grew up going to church together. When Kailyn approached me about designing their invitation suite, I was thrilled to get to be a part of their big day! For as long as I've known Kailyn, she's always had great style, and her wedding ideas are no different! The save the dates have a vintage travel look (all credit goes to Kailyn for the adorable idea)...

Renee wrote Kailyn and Philip's names with her amazing handwriting, I did-up the design with vintage details, and Kailyn printed them on kraft paper and added the embellishments--it was really a team effort and I think they turned out pretty cute! I may be biased, though...

Kailyn and Philip, I wish you guys all the best and I'm already looking forward to working on the other paper goods for your wedding!

xoxo.

P.S. Aren't they the cutest?

a very merry christmas break.

Today marks our last day in Portland, so I thought I'd do a quick recap of what we've been up to. We flew in on the night of Dec 22nd, so you better believe that on the morning of the 23rd, I was having myself a Crema latte. Here's a little rundown of how that went:

We spent lots of time with family, and soaking in the beautiful green-ness of Oregon.

The meals were (of course) to die for: Posole on Christmas Eve, Cinnamon Rolls for Christmas Breakfast, Prime Rib for Christmas Dinner, and on and on...

I also got to work on a lot for CookingThyme with my mom and sister. We have all of the January, February and March classes up on the website, so if you're in the Portland area, check them out! It's been a fabulous trip, but we'll be happy to settle back in at home this week. We have so many blessings in our lives, and this trip has been a great reminder of that. We love our family, friends and good food! And this city, well, there just are no words (okay, maybe there's a few). Beautiful. Green. Recyclable. Cultural. Compostable. Etc. Love it.

sunday lovin: community.

Just dropping in to put on record that I love our community here in Abilene. This is our lifegroup from church, and we've been so blessed to get to know and serve with all of them. It's made this whole move to Texas much less homesick-inducing or culture-shocking, and I'm really grateful for that (having been a pro at the homesick thing in college). No matter where life takes Landon and I, I think we'll always remember this place in our lives as a really special one.

That's all.

xoxo.

the TylerBright Texas weekend (and a baby shower).

Remember when I told you about TylerBright? Well, the "Tyler" of TylerBright came to visit me over the weekend! It was LOADS of fun, and we accomplished some great things (including a 5k...of which there are no photos included in this post. Turns out running a 5k when you're out of shape is not as fun as it sounds).

There was lots of this (yummy food):

a little of this (YouTube karaoke...who knew?):

and a whole lot of this (Renee putting her amazing handwriting to work on my tablet/stylus thingy):

I also attended a baby shower this weekend, and Renee helped me put together a little present for the mommy-to-be. First up: Some embellished long-sleeved onesies for the baby...

And some lemon sea salt scrub for the mommy!

All wrapped up...

I can't take credit for the adorbs handwriting, we all know that's Renee...

And, if you want some of this adorbs handwriting for yourself, head over to our shop!

I found the recipe for the lemon sea salt scrub on The Beauty Department...LC to the rescue! (which makes this the second time I've found myself thanking Lauren Conrad publicly on my blog...see wedding hair)

The baby shower was in our church library, which just so happens to be the coolest room I've ever been in. Giant globe? Cubby desks? U-shaped table? I'm sold.
It was an AWESOME weekend, and I'm so glad Renee made the trek to little Abilene all the way from San Diego!

xoxo.

P.S. We also did quite a bit of work developing a price sheet for both handwritten and typed wedding invitations through TylerBright. If you know someone who is planning a wedding and you think they'd like our style, feel free to pass our name along!

when friends come to town.

My dear friend (and business partner) Renee is coming to Abilene for the weekend!! We have lots of good things planned for the weekend, like running a 5k (yikes!), watching a real Texas football game (Friday Night Lights anyone?), and, most importantly, giving TylerBright a little love!

She visited me in Oregon last October, so I'm thinking this is an annual thing now (right, Renee?)!

xoxo.

P.S. She also has killer handwriting.

life is in the people.

Giving my bouquet to Grams at our wedding
(Heads up: This post was written last night, just in case your internal clock is keeping track of the "last nights" and "todays")

An hour ago, I didn't know what I would write about for Tuesday. Some people might think that writing should be 100% inspired, and so if every day isn't inspiring, writing every day isn't necessary. For me, writing and posting here is a practice, and if I don't do it every day, I likely won't do it at all. Sometimes it comes easy, and sometimes, I feel uninspired, but I write or post anyway. Tonight didn't have a whole lot of inspiration, until Grandma stepped in.

I called my dear, sweet Grams to wish her a happy birthday. She turned 83 today. She told me about her lovely birthday weekend, visiting family and going to Mt. Rainier for the first time. She asked about Landon and I, and I filled her in on what we've been doing and how we're adjusting to our new life here in Texas. But what's amazing is how she said so much more than just her words.

She said that she's grateful for our family. She said that this Texas thing was a big move, after all, and it's okay if it's not all comfortable at first. She said that any job is a good job. She said that life does move forward, even in the midst of loss and change and hardship. She said that I'm in her prayers, which means all of us, my entire family, is in her prayers. I can't think of a better place to be.

Life is in the people, isn't it? I was feeling uninspired, and then something within our conversation just touched my soul and a thousand thoughts were born. All because we connected. Last night, our Life Group had a wonderful, beautiful time in prayer, where real, raw needs were shared and prayed for. I believe God is already answering those prayers, and I believe that life is in those moments. Those moments where we stop being super-efficient-money-making-american-dream-following-robots, and we start being people. With real people problems, real people joys and real people interactions.

Those real people interactions are tough for me sometimes, because I'm shy and timid, but I'm realizing that I'm my best, most responsive and aware self when I allow myself to be changed and taught and shaped by other people. Other people who are honestly seeking God and honest even if seeking God doesn't always make sense. Life is beautiful, people are beautiful, and life is in the people.

xoxo.

ANNOUNCING: TylerBright

Happy Tuesday, friends! I know it's back to work for most of us, and I hope your 4-day work week is off to a great start. Today I've got something special to announce! My dear friend Renee and I have been in the process (for almost a year...yikes!) of setting up a little shop on Etsy, and it's finally ready to show its face. We've named it TylerBright, which is a not-super-creative combination of our last names (and has also had some of you thinking that I'm preggers with a boy that we're naming Tyler...for the record, I'm not :).

This all came about when I asked Renee to help create our wedding invitations last summer. You can see them in the center photo below. Renee has KILLER cute handwriting, and I love to make little ditties on the computer, so we're combining forces and offering invitations and prints in our shop. Here's some of the designs we've got listed:
This wedding scroll (above) is one of my absolute favorites. Renee made one for our wedding last summer, and we had our families and wedding party sign as witnesses of our big day. And Renee can make one for your wedding too!

Keep in mind that we are rookie Etsy sellers, and feel free to share any advice with us if you're an Etsy pro! We also don't have the best camera equipment, but I promise that all of the designs are prettier in person than they are in some of these photos, and we've got more designs coming in the next few weeks. We're also open to doing custom work, so if you've got something in mind, either convo us on Etsy or send an email to: tylerbrightdesigns (at) gmail (dot) com

If you're interested, you can
visit our shop here.

xoxo.

goodbye summer.

Can you believe tomorrow is September?!? Yikes, time flies! While we've still got at least another month or so of crazy hot weather here in Texas, summer is coming to a close. We've had an eventful summer, which started with our move to Texas. Landon had his first class yesterday, and he taught his first class yesterday also! What a proud wifey I am. Before August is over, I wanted to share with you a few things that have inspired me this summer. I'm loving peachy pinks and earthtones, hence the theme running through the photo above.
Clockwise from top left:
Michaela's sweet braided knot tutorial. Love that girl.
Did you see the how-to for this amazing pallet bed by Jaime from Prudent Baby? She also made a great video of the transformation.
Place cards from our wedding, via Ruffled. This one is less in the "inspiration" category and more in the "fond memories" bank. :) Photos by Yasmin Khajavi.
My dear friend Angie's pallet frame display, featuring photos of her recent trip to Ghana.

Ask me how I feel about pallets right now.

xoxo.

PS. I've been wiggled! Thanks to Blair, who is the sweet blogger behind Wild and Precious. She's also got a killer Joe Purdy playlist up today. Head over here to check it out.

PPS. One year ago. Like I said, time flies.

people i love: megan.

L: Megs + I at graduation...clearly; R. After a lovely round of mini golf at my bachelorette party.
A very happy birthday to my dear friend and former roommate Megan Libby! Megan and I lived together for three years (that's longer than Landon and I so far...) and they were the best! There were endless late night chats, and also endless mornings when Megan didn't yell at me for not waking up when my alarm went off (she's handled my poor getting up habits the best of anyone I've lived with...). We've also been know to steal gather pallets, make killer music videos and engage in an epic marshmallow gun battles. I love this girl, and wish I was with her to celebrate today!
L: Playing with toys? Not sure where those came from; M: 70's Skate Night; R: The weddin'
Happy birthday Meggy Moo!

play time.

Story time! Last month, I told you about my dearest friend, Maryn. We go all the way back to 2nd grade, and I mentioned some of our sweet memories together in her birthday post. I also mentioned our KILLER play grocery store at the end of the post, but allow me to share the details today.

When we were in elementary school, Maryn and I forced our families to save empty cereal boxes, food jars, cans, packaging and the like before we set up our place of business in her basement. It was AWESOME, and kept us entertained for hours. Just to give you a quick mental picture of our devotion to this place: our Christmas presents that year included an adding machine and price stickers. We did not mess around when it came to play time.

So yesterday, when Maryn sent me a link to this play grocery store (pictured), which, to be honest, puts ours to shame in the cuteness department, I had to share it.

Adorable, right? See more photos here.

xoxo.

PS...199 followers?!? Who will be the lucky 200, I wonder?

PSS...In case you missed it, our wedding was featured on IHOD yesterday!

captured.

My dear friend Angie recently returned from a trip to Ghana. She happens to be a magician behind the camera, and I couldn't help but share some of her photos here. Aren't they beautiful?

Landon and I recently finished watching Long Way Down, a documentary television series filmed in 2007 that captures Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's motorcycle trip from the top of John O'Groats, Scotland, to Cape Town, South Africa. It's a follow up series to Long Way Round, which they filmed in 2004 (my sister recommended them to us, and I strongly recommend them as well). Both series are wonderful, but I especially loved Long Way Down. Not only are McGregor and Boorman HILARIOUS to watch, they're also very, very genuine in sharing their thoughts and feelings as the trip played out. One point they continually discuss is the fact that despite the enormous amount of violence that has taken place around the continent of Africa, the people are still warm, friendly, welcoming and generous. Based on these photos, I'm sure Angie found that to be true on her trip as well.

Head over to Angie's blog, The Wonder of It All, and give her some love.

xoxo.

PS. See our photoshoot with Ang here.

It's the people that make a wedding significant, memorable and all-around awesome.
This is just a little tribute to our people.

Me + my dad

Bests. They really are.

Love these guys too.

To everyone who has guided, taught and shaped us. Thanks for being with us on our day.

And finally, to my mom, without whom this wedding wouldn't have happened.
As you were aptly dubbed in the comments on Wednesday, you really are a rockstar.
I don't remember what that little handshake we're doing was for, but I'd like to think we were saying "we did it!"
In the end, it's about being able to spend great moments with people you love. This was just that.

xoxo.

PS. Happy Friday!
